About this blog

This is a blog for me to write about assorted things that interest me (while remaining anonymous), mainly related to economics, public policy, and occasionally moral philosophy, more for cathartic reasons than because I expect any readers, though readers are welcome. As the blog name suggests, my posts will come from a classical liberal/libertarian perspective, but not all of my posts will relate to politics or that specific political ideology. I am a scientist by profession, so note that I am a dilettante on these topics, though I will occasionally do some 'data-oriented' posts that I like to think will be more in line with my professional skills.

Inasmuch my anonymity requires a defense, I will just say that it is extremely socially unpopular to be libertarian or 'pro-capitalism' where I live, both geographically and socially (academia), and I'm a disagreeable enough person as is, so I've decided it's best for social and professional reasons to minimize the possibility of politics intruding on real life by being, as the name of the blog also indicates, anonymous.

How Do We Prepare for an Epidemic without Bankrupting Ourselves?

In keeping with the spirit of the times, I will share some of my thoughts on the coronavirus outbreak, and what kind of public policy response would enable us to prepare for such an outbreak while still being economically feasible. I've found much of the popular writing on what the right policies are for epidemic preparedness to be disappointing. It is often too vague (Bill Gates's article in the New England Journal of Medicine struck me as short on details, which is bizarre given his foundation's involvement in many specific responses to the ongoing epidemic). Sometimes it's shamelessly partisan. Sometimes it's implausible (e.g., demanding that society constantly have enough resources on hand to handle an epidemic at any moment). But I think the problem must be talked about in greater detail for viable policies to be conceived and implemented. Did Peter Turchin predict 2020?

 Peter Turchin, along with Jack Goldstone, claims in an article in Noema (https://www.noemamag.com/welcome-to-the-turbulent-twenties/) that he (they, I guess) predicted the ongoing turbulence of 2020. I believe Turchin has made this claim before, but it's a somewhat annoying claim for a pretty obvious reason: Turchin didn't, as far as I know, predict the pandemic that either caused or significantly contributed to most of the unrest of 2020. So he didn't really predict what's happening. Maybe it all would have happened anyway, but we don't know. He seems a lot like someone gloating about predicting a horse would a lose a race.. after the horse gets shot by a sniper in the bleachers. My interests have led me to begin reading various works in the area of socialist economic theory (and to some extent economic practice), and this has spurred a great deal of thinking on my part about the topic.
